Disappearing Down the Hole

Ext Byker Metro Station: Year 2023 Day

Mam is reading to Child (8) from her mobile sitting on bench waiting for train.

MAM
I’m late I’m late, for a very important date.

CHILD
So what were libraries Mam?

MAM
You could take books out of them like Alice in Wonderland.

 CHILD
What are books Mam?

MAM
You know what books are we have some at home.

CHILD
But they are ornaments Mam. What are they for?

MAM
We used to read from them.

CHILD
Weren’t they too heavy?

Mam stands up and pulls child up.

MAM
They were nice to hold, they had covers and they smelt nice.

CHILD
So why don’t we have them anymore then?

MAM
Well first they shut all the libraries and then the bookshops were taken over by PC Universe. People started forgetting about books… Stand back here it comes…

 The train comes into view
